The Zahir

I recently read “The Zahir” by Paulo Coelho

Well it would be obvious to all who know me that I would start off my blog with impressions of a book!

Coming back to the topic of the literary spectacle by Paulo Coelho. I think that he has probably written them in bursts… (Don’t all authors do that… I am sure you will have that question – yes they all do but him specifically)

He talks about what it takes to take self-centered ppl (whom u care about) out of their shell… make them aware about the world around them and be more receptive of ppl around them, be more caring, concerned etc.

He talks how they have to deal with their fears (this can be insecurity, overconfidence, carelessness). Partners can be especially hard to deal with if they possess any of the above quality (don’t think that u r the unfortunate one with such a partner … almost all have partners with any of the above mentioned problems if not the other person then its probably you…)

Though the novel ends on a happy note still it sort of makes u think that wouldn’t he have saved himself the whole effort (though it might seem pretty cool to be walking across mountain and plains with unknown ppl in one of the coldest regions… its NOT) had he just paid attention to the wants of his partner, who I think just wanted his attention. In this case you could compare her with a child doing all the wild/restricted stuff to take have an extended attention span compared to his/her kid sibling who seems to have monopoly on the attention of his/her parents.

But then what can we say about her making him take a trip across spain (Road to Santiago!) which was her way of helping him in conquering his fears. This makes you think about how many times have you thought that you can do a certain thing but just held back because you fear being unsuccessful and the dream turning into a nightmare. Its true let’s face it there is a real chance of failure but if dream was not meant to be acted upon then how can you differ between a dream and a hallucination?

It took him 8 years and he lost his wife…2 years to find her back…how many would we take?

  1. Nice analysis of the book man..I hve also read it and will second you on what you have written…..

  2. Buddy,

Ur article motivates me to read the book. I will read it but I don’t know when.

My take on this………Sit back every day, relax and think about ur life and people around you. Think how u influence them and more importantly how u get influenced by them… 99% of things would be taken care of….for remaining 1% u need cohelos, iacoccas, dickens, forsyths of the world…Cheers:-)
